These are 3 of the 5 values that were beautifully and collaboratively crafted by a whole village of community members.

My role on the project allowed me to co-facilitate workshops plan activities for our school visits and design a neighborhood vibez tour.

The community members involved throughout this process were scholars, teachers, staff, school leaders, families, board members, and administrators.

This is what Co-Design looks like!

ASCEND CHARTER SCHOOL NETWORK

Using a deeply embedded co-design approach, we helped define a new mission statement, purpose statement, and values for the Brooklyn based network of charter schools.

Date

Winter 2021

How might we engage the Ascend community and network to co-design and align on a guiding purpose that can drive Ascend’s behaviors, identity, and outcomes?

The Design Challenge
The Process

Phase 1 - Explore and Co-design

  • We used collaborative qualitative approaches that engaged key stakeholders in various workshop moments.

Phase 2 - Refine and Finalize

The Deliverable(s)

In the end, we delivered a new mission statement, purpose statement, and a set of values.

Role

Senior Design Researcher

REFLECTION MOMENT:
By the time this work was wrapping up, it truly felt like the words used to describe this network of schools were deeply informed by the experiences of its community members.
POST PROJECT:
November 2022, $11 million dollars were donated by billionaire philanthropist and author MacKenzie Scott to the Ascend Charter School network in Brooklyn!
She believes in its mission, purpose, and values. SO WILD!!
